How long does alcohol addiction last?

Question by Danny: How long does alcohol addiction last?
I’ve had alcohol problem and i quit drinking months ago, but i’m still getting cravings. I thought once you go cold turkey these feelings would stop after a matter of weeks! How long does it usually take for an addiction to go before you can start drinking again?

  1. It depends on the person.Have you tried treatment programs?

  2. If you are an alcoholic you will be one for the rest of your life. You can’t start drinking again, you will wind up right back where you started.

  3. Active hardcore cravings…..Most of those slow down within a few months. Otherwise, you NEVER really stop the ‘wants’ if you are a true addict. Sorry dude….good luck!!!

  4. if you had an alcohol addiction, and you haven’t been drinking that means that you are “sober” and chances are that if you start drinking again you will right back at square one, addictions don’t just go away.

  5. Forever.

You can’t. An addiction like this is something you can learn to control, but never get rid of. If you ever drink again, it is most likely that you will succumb to your addiction again and end up where you were all those months ago. You may feel those cravings on and off for the rest of your life.

When you do a program like Alcoholics Anonymous, they explain all of this to you. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, whether you ever touch the booze again or not. Your choice is between being a non-drinking alcoholic or not. Unfortunately, you can’t just wait for the addiction to pass, like a cold, and then go back to your old ways and not expect to still be addicted.

I’d advise you to get help, if you’re having trouble staying sober.

  7. I’ve found that it lasts until the next drink

  8. if you’re an alcoholic, the addiction stays forever for some people.
a lot of them, depending on how long they’ve been alcoholics for, can never drink again.

There is 2 sides to addiction. There is the actual physical adiction and then there is the mental side of the addiction.
Generally speaking, although this depends on many things such as height, weight, gender, and so on, you can flush out a physical addicition to alcohol in around a week, if you keep hydrated, eat well and exercise appropriately.
The mental side of an addiction is the part of it that is very difficult to get rid of. Often, for an alcoholic, drinking is a coping mechanism, and the first thing that you need to learn is new ways to cope with things like stress. Another part of it is your mind telling you it is something you NEED. It’s important to ignore this and find something like a hobby to distract you from this. Another thing is habit. You need to replase the habbit of drinking with something else, this could be anything really, as long as it’s not something else that could be destructive if it becomes an addiction. It sounds stupid, but cross words, soduku, exercising, things like this.
When trying to get out of addiction, it’s important to have a support system. For the time being, be away from people that have a similar problem, and people that male you feel stressed or depressed. Make sure you keep contact with people who make you feel good about yourself and who are good at making you laugh.
Support groups that you can go to in your local community are a good idea to try, and if this doesn’t work, there are a few websites which can help, such as http://www.dailystrength.org
I hope this helps you :)
